Nicholas Cwick

Except for the short time that he spent in 2004 with Carl & Nathalie Bouckaert in Chatsworth, Georgia, Nick has spent most of his professional career in California. After much thought and deliberation, he decided to relocate to the East Coast in September 2008 to be closer to the 3* and 4* competitors and competitions. Since his relocation he has been riding for Buck Davidson summering in Pennsylvania and wintering in Ocala until his recent move to Newnan Georgia (August 2009) where he started his business "Capstone Eventing". Nick has been competing successfully at the one star level since 1998 and at FEI-level competitions since 2002 on a variety of horses with many top finishes at the two and three star levels. In 2008 Nick and his own Asterix placed eighth at the CCI3* Jersey Fresh Three-Day Event qualifying them for the 2009 Rolex Kentucky CCI4*. As he is a 2009 featured rider, you can read about their Rolex journey from Nick’s diary on the Rolex Kentucky web site http://www.rk3de.org . In June 2009, Nicks new young prospect Simply Priceless was very competitive finishing second at his first CCI** at the Bromont Three-Day Event in Quebec Canada.

Most of Nick’s upper level horses over the years were his own that he started, trained and subsequently sold to young riders, amateurs and professionals as either event horses or as show jumpers. All of whom have continued successful careers with their new owners. Nick competes numerous sales horses and horses for his clients at all levels instilling confidence in them no matter how green they are or how schooled they are. He takes great pride in teaching the horses to be correct, relaxed, and to enjoy their work.

In addition to Nick’s very competent competition record, he has extensive teaching experience from beginner through the advanced level. He began his official teaching career at a young age in 2002 as the assistant trainer for Yves Sauvignon at Oakridge Training Stables in Santa Rosa California teaching students through the preliminary level and coaching students through intermediate at the events. From 2005 until September 2008 Nick partnered with Dayna Lynd-Pugh at Flying Tail Farm in Gilroy California teaching event riders through the advanced level and jumper clients through level 3. He also conducted clinics for the Sierra Pacific Region Pony Club, and regular Adult Amateur clinics in the area. Nick loves teaching. It is quite rewarding for Nick to watch his students grow and gain confidence in their riding. He feels privileged to share in their accomplishments whether they win a ribbon or whether they finally learned how to get their horse on the bit. His patience and ability to explain both simple and complex concepts give him an ideal teaching style for students of all levels. Nick has also had a great deal of experience since 1997 with training young horses and re-training difficult horses having worked for Ira Schulman, International Horse Dealer in Arizona for many years. Nick also rode and trained young horses for Sheryl Kunkle a Warmblood Sport Horse breeder and Grand Prix dressage rider in Temecula California, and for Sue Wilson a private breeder in Gardnerville Nevada where he also broke and started eventing her stallion FDF Bet On Me. Nick has assisted Kim Yacobucci, Grand Prix Dressage rider and trainer in Scottsdale, Arizona with hard to handle dressage horses and has frequently ridden horses for Pam Nelson and Heidi Gaian in California.

Nick has continued his well rounded riding education with training sessions and attending clinics in all three disciplines with many top professionals:

  • Eventing: Captain Mark Phillips, David & Karen O’Connor, Buck Davidson, Leslie Law, Kim Severson and Jimmy Wofford.
  • Dressage: Klaus Balkenhol, Volker Brommann, Pam Nelson, Pierre Cousyn and Kathleen Raine.
  • Show Jumping: Bernie Traurig, Dianne Grod and Susie Hutchinson.

"Nick is an exceptional teacher: patient and thoughtful, always pushing me to improve but never making me feel that I cannot achieve what he has asked. I often ride better under Nick’s eyes than I think I can. And every time I watch him ride my horse over fences, I am struck both by how much I learn from his quiet, correct riding and by how much my horse’s confidence grows under his guidance."
